September crime spike in Pyrmont and Ultimo

The local police have promised to address the recent crime spike in the Pyrmont Ultimo area.
Last month there was an increase in the number of assaults and some other high profile crimes involving a stun gun, a stolen motorbike and a brawl.
Local Crime Manage, Detective Inspector John Maricic said although there have been more assaults than usual in the last month over a longer period the area remains stable.
“It is acknowledged that there were a number of incidents in recent weeks . . . We are working with MAC and Maritime Services to monitor and prevent similar incidents in the future.”
Last month chased down and arrested an 18 year old man after for stealing motorbike chase. A 27-year-old man was arrested for the alleged possession of two swords, a gun and a knife and another offender in relation to the spate of stun gun attacks.
Police are still investigating other crimes involving a stun gun and a 60-man brawl which occurred on Pirrama Road, Pyrmont.
Member of the Community Safety Precinct Committee, Elizabeth Elenius, said the recent increase in crime around the around should prompt a review of the area’s police presence.
“There should be a re-think of where they could locate a reasonable police presence,” she said.
Following the withdrawal of development application for the Leichhardt LAC, the future of the Glebe Police Station is unclear.
“Perhaps this is an opportunity to review the area’s local command,” Ms Elenius said.
“It’s our understanding that in all the major capital cities there are police near casinos.”
Det. Insp. Maricic said many of the arrests are due to the diligence of police and the presence of the mobile police station in the local area.
“Just because you do not see the Police doesn’t mean they are not there. We have plain clothes and specialist investigating a variety of crimes across the command.”
He said the past closure of the Pyrmont Police Station has no relationship with crime rates of the area.
“Regarding the Police Station issue at Pyrmont, I don’t believe that is a contributing factor, as statistics have shown that most categories of crime across the state have dropped through improved policing practices and deployment, including targeted operations using Police from local, region and specialist commands.”
