LIVE WIRE – Thursday Oct 20th

On Wednesday 26th Ball Park Music are playing at the Beach Rd Hotel. Their ridiculously infectious pop numbers could force even a complete scrooge to smile and bop the night away. They’re supported by Northeast Party House and The jungle Giants.

Thursday 27th Exiled Cuban jazz pianist and composer Fabian Almazan will be at the pointy end of a trio featuring Linda Oh on double bass and drumming sensation Kendrick Scott. He’ll be playing numbers from his debut album Personalities. Aussie hip-hop veterans Def Wish Cast are celebrating the release of their new single Dun Proppa at the Annandale Hotel. They’ve been doing it for about 20 years now and they’re coming to you with a huge support lineup that includes Bingethinkers, Blades of Hades (Newcastle) and Herb. Trendy Sydney indie dance-pop group Voltaire Twins are playing Fbi Social and will be previewing tracks from their upcoming EP Romulus. This is just off the back of a nightmarish video for their single Animalia which features a taxidermist taking to two feathered human corpses. At the Oxford Arts Factory Pluto Jonze will be bringing his own unique version of electronic indie-pop. Along with a barrage of sequencers and synths he’ll be joined by a backing three piece band and will be supported by Toucan and Tim Fitz.

On Friday 28th Melbourne rockers Trial Kennedy will be playing at the Oxford Arts Factory. Their brand of meandering melodic rock has been turning heads for some years now and you can catch them playing tracks off their latest release Living Undesigned. They’ll be supported by Strangers, The Dead Love and Royal Chant.

Saturday 29th Folk-blues outfit The Drones are playing the Metro Theatre with support from ex Magic Dirt’s Adalita. Lead singer Gareth Liddiard lays on the Aussie accent real thick but he’s got one of the most honest voices in Australian music. This’ll be one powerful show. There’ll be a second dose of Aussie hip-hop at the Annandale Hotel this weekend with Melbourne MC Mantra. He’ll be showcasing tracks off his album Speaking Volumes, which features collaborations from renowned Aussie beatmakers and rappers, as well as some older numbers. Staying on the hip-hop tip Rakaa of legendary Dilated Peoples fame will be playing at the Gaelic Theatre. He’ll be supported by the equally influential DJ Rhettmatic of the Beat Junkies, King Kapisi, Tassha Pearce and Dialect + Despair. At FBi Social local group Jack Colwell & The Owls will be releasing the haunting folk-blues single Hopechest. They’re supported by Brendan McLean and Post Paint.

Sunday 30th Canadian rock & roll vet Jeff Martin of The Tea Party will be playing at The Vanguard with his new band 777. It’ll be a wonderful opportunity to catch a true seasoned talent in an intimate venue and he’ll probably play a couple of Tea Party songs as well. What more could you want?
