LIVE WIRE – Thurs Sept 22nd
Saturday 24th sees Sierra Fin launch their debut album Cautionary Tale of the Beautiful Blackout at The Vanguard. The album is laden with twinkling piano parts, broad vocal harmonies and a symphony orchestra. They’ve opted to go orchestra-less on their launch in favour of a more intimate feel but expect their show to be just as moving. Also in Newtown that night rocksteady reggae stalwarts King Tide will be performing at the Freaky Sydney Fringe Festival Club Night at Notes. They’ll be joined by Dog Trumpet. Adelaide alt-country gentlemen Leader Cheetah and psych-folksters Belles Will Ring are playing
across town at the Gaelic Theatre. On Sunday 25th US experimental space pop group Wet Hair bring their psychedelic dreamscapes to the Red Rattler. The trio use a variety of synths along with live drums and bass and garbled affected vocals to produce their
eery sound. They’re supported by Kitchen Floor from Brisbane and Chrome Dome of Melbourne. On the sunnier side of the musical spectrum The Girl from Minas, Alda Rezende brings her brand of Brazilian jazz and boss nova to the Basement with percussionist Esdra ‘Nenem’ Ferreira. Also at the Basement on Tuesday 27th local pop singer-songwriter
Daniel Allars launches his debut EP Young Gun from the Big Smoke at the Basement. For something a little different the American vaudevillian Luna Tart is bringing her ukelele and her satirical sense of humour to Notes to promote her new album of heartbreak ballads 50 Million Ways To Break Your Heart.
Wednesday 28th sees the Legends of New Orleans tour come to the Opera House. Expect to get schooled in soul, jazz and rhythm and blues on a night featuring some of the most influential musicians of the Big Easy fraternity Allen Toussaint, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and “Piano Professor” Jon Cleary. Alternatively you can catch Guineafowl do his pop folk thing at the Beach Rd Hotel.
On Thursday 29th Sydney institution Marsala play at 505 and this unique group of musicians, all versed in traditional sounds from across the globe, will be playing the best of world music. They cover the range of sounds out of Africa, Europe, South America and everywhere else in between.
Friday 30th Falcona Records takes over the Oxford Arts Factory for a label showcase. The night features Cadillac, Mrs Bishop and the Fundamentals along with a whole host of label affiliated DJs. Also on Friday Goodgod celebrates the birthday of their baby Small Club. The weekend long party starts with the Birthday Bashment night featuring UK dancehall musician Gappy Ranks. Props to anyone that can make out the lyrics through the thick accent of his Rasta rapping. Supported by Guerre and Toni Toni Lee.
