LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide September 8th

On Thursday 8th, world-class Australian violinist Daniel Weltinger is launching his album Souvenirs, which sees the Sydney-based musician paying tribute to the great gypsy composer and guitarist Django Reinhardt. This is a must-see for any fans of gypsy jazz, as Weltinger’s is truly extraordinary. Also on Thursday, Surry Hills venue Tone nears the end of the lease on its current space with Songs performing live. With local agency Popfrenzy presenting, one could expect some truly wonderful and alternative local music. Tiger Choir are in support. Friday 9th finds Melbourne cool dudes Eagle and The Worm performing at Oxford Art Factory in Paddington. Think groovy, 60s-inspired indie-pop on the party side of things. The Frowning Clouds are in support. At The Metro in Sydney’s CBD on Saturday 10th, Aussie folk’s Mr. Nice Guy, Josh Pyke is bringing the goods for an evening of tasteful acoustic pop. Also on Saturday at the Basement, local nu-soul master, pianist Danny Goodacre is bringing his Danny G Felix Project for a double bill with Roger Vs The Man for a night of top shelf local pop, jazz and funk – a guaranteed party. Who likes ska music? Ok, a few hands went up, and for those dedicated punks, Sunday 11th has the Ska Weekender Festival Harbour Cruise. Leaving from Pyrmont Bay Wharf, the cruise features The Bennies, Son of Dad and Ebolagoldfish, all paying tribute to Rancid, Reel Big Fish and The Police respectively. On Wednesday 14th, Melbourne rockers Trial Kennedy are at the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi Beach. Locals Strangers and I Am Giant in support. Thursday 15th finds an interesting one-off event in the form of Art Vs Science and Friends playing the music of Icehouse. The new intimate live room upstairs at The Beresford just off Taylor’s Square is the venue – get in quick! Also on Thursday, James Reyne (ex-Australian Crawl frontman) is performing an intimate acoustic set at The Basement in Circular Quay, providing a rare opportunity for crawl fans to see the singer-songwriter up close and personal. Eccentric Aussie group Arabesk are playing at the fabulous Notes on Enmore Road in Newtown on Friday 16th – anyone who likes madcap gypsy folk is going to have a blast. Melbourne’s Public Opinion Afro Orchestra are in the area, playing the stoic Hotel Gearin in Katoomba on Friday 16th, followed by a show at Oxford Art Factory in Paddington on Saturday 17th, where they will bring down the house with their contemporary Australian take on Fela Kuti’s legendary Afrobeat style. New Zealand born, Melbourne-based Kimbra is not messing around: having played a very intimate show at GoodGod Small Club only a couple of months ago, she is back in town headlining her own gig at The Metro in Sydney’s CBD – Melbourne’s fabulous Husky and Fire!, Santa Rosa, Fire! are in support for the night. Also on Saturday, FBi supported festival Changing Lanes is back, taking place in the streets of Surry Hills with PVT, The Vasco Era, Papa Vs Pretty and Lanie Lane making up just a fraction of the stellar Aussie line-up. Lastly, Saturday also finds Adelaide pop-rockers City Riots playing at the Beach Road. After extensive U.S. touring earlier this year, these guys are hot property, so check them out!
