The new intimate live room upstairs at The Beresford just off Taylor’s Square is the venue – get in quick! Also on Thursday, James Reyne (ex-Australian Crawl frontman) is performing an intimate acoustic set at The Basement in Circular Quay, providing a rare opportunity for crawl fans to see the singer-songwriter up close and personal. Eccentric Aussie group Arabesk are playing at the fabulous Notes on Enmore Road in Newtown on Friday 16th – anyone who likes madcap gypsy folk is going to have a blast. Melbourne’s Public Opinion Afro Orchestra are in the area, playing the stoic Hotel Gearin in Katoomba on Friday 16th, followed by a show at Oxford Art Factory in Paddington on Saturday 17th, where they will bring down the house with their contemporary Australian take on Fela Kuti’s legendary Afrobeat style. New Zealand born, Melbourne-based Kimbra is not messing around: having played a very intimate show at GoodGod Small Club only a couple of months ago, she is back in town headlining her own gig at The Metro in Sydney’s CBD – Melbourne’s fabulous Husky and Fire!, Santa Rosa, Fire! are in support for the night. Also on Saturday, FBi supported festival Changing Lanes is back, taking place in the streets of Surry Hills with PVT, The Vasco Era, Papa Vs Pretty and Lanie Lane making up just a fraction of the stellar Aussie line-up. Lastly, Saturday also finds Adelaide pop-rockers City Riots playing at the Beach Road. After extensive U.S. touring earlier this year, these guys are hot property, so check them out! Tina Harrod, one of Australia’s finest ever female singers is performing with a formidable live band at 505 in Surry Hills on Saturday (busy night!). Anyone inclined to a bit of world-class local soul music should head along. Still at 505, Tuesday 20th finds the Pen Island trio there, with Miles Thomas (drums) Gerard Masters (piano) and Brett Hirst (bass) promising an exciting and accessible jazz gig to spice up your early mid week. On Wednesday 21st, indie/Americana four piece from Adelaide Leader Cheetah will be visiting the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi – Wednesdays are usually free so get along! Also that night, Glenn Richards (of Melbourne’s Augie March) and Dan Luscombe will be teaming up to play at the Brass Monkey Cronulla – a rare collaboration between two great Aussie songwriters. Thursday 22nd finds all-girl teen sensations Stonefield playing at Oxford Art Factory in Paddington – with the amount of attention these girls are getting, this show is bound to pack out so get in quick! A couple of suburbs away at the apparently reborn Lansdowne Hotel, Velociraptor are performing their irresistibly titled “Drunken Knife Fights Ensue” show with the support of Purple Sneakers. Psychadelic Sydney band Richard In Your Mind relseasing a new album and GoodGod Small Club on Liverpool St is the place to see them play it live.
