2011: The year and postcode for Crabtree

Elizabeth Bay resident, Lucas Crabtree, is the new voice for locals of the 2011 postcode.

Elected as the president for the 2011 Resident Association, Mr Crabtree hopes to revitalise the group and address the unique problems facing residents who live “next to one of the biggest entertainment precincts in Australia.

“I’m excited by the prospect of helping the local residents fight the most important issues,” he said. “We will work closely with residents living
in the entire 2011 postcode…in order to make this the best area in metropolitan Sydney in which to live in.”

Mr Crabtree is looking to combat the precinct’s long-term battle with noise and traffic congestion by calling on City of Sydney to better enforce laws. He wants to see pubs and clubs in Kings Cross comply with the Liquor Act and proper trading hours.

“In the early hours of the morning, residents have the right to be sleeping,” he said. “We’ve got the police but we really call on Clover Moore to service the community and employ compliance officers… we need more from the City of Sydney.”

Mr Crabtree acknowledged that the area’s infamous struggle with drunken and disorderly behaviour was a complex issue but approved of the
State Government’s controversial ‘Three Strikes and You’re Out’ policy for late night venues.

“I think the principle of holding venues to account is important.”

The contentious redevelopment of Elizabeth Bay Marina, which is currently under review by City of Sydney, is another issue Mr Crabtree aims to lobby against.

“The marina is not supported by the local community,” he said. “We are determined to ensure that the 2011 neighbourhood is not overdeveloped inappropriately for the sake of a quick developer profit.

“The proposed Elizabeth Bay Marina, with its plans for a 40-berth marina, is just such a development.”

Mr Crabtree said the marina would impact on the amenity of local residents and was “an inappropriate use of the harbour itself”.

Treasurer of the resident group, Norman Thompson, is confident and enthusiastic about what Mr Crabtree will bring to the table.

“We’re really very pleased,” he said. “[Lucas] is obviously a very intelligent young man…and he’s also very personable and very easy to get along with.”
