LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide September 1

At 505, ARIA Award winning jazz group Baecastuff are playing on Thursday 1st, a very rare appearance from an amazing and all-star Australian band. Also on Thursday, Melbourne songstress Owl Eyes is back in town to play at GoodGod Small Club. Her recently reformed live band are getting warm reviews, so worth heading down to the intimate Liverpool St venue. Thursday also finds camp synth-pop five piece Architecture In Helsinki play the Metro in Sydney’s CBD – anyone interested better get in quick to avoid disappointment. Also at the Metro, Friday 2nd finds enduring punk rockers Frenzal Rhomb in concert for what will surely be an all-out show. Teenage Bottlerocket and Totally Unicorn are in support. The quirky Camelot Lounge in Marrickville hosts Sydney singer Lucie Thorne, also on Friday 2nd, as she launches her Bonfires In Silver City album tour. With an all-star band of Aussie session players, this girl is not holding back – definitely worth a look. Saturday 3rd sees one of the highlights of the month at the Basement in Circular Quay: U.S. soul legend Syl Johnson is in the country and playing with Australia’s own contemporary soul legends The Bamboos as his backing band. This is surely a one-off so soul fans get on down! Sunday 4th has alt-folk-rockers The Trobes launching their E.P. Lend Me Your E.P. at the enduring and legendary Annandale HotelPicture Perfect and The Keep Secrets are in support. Back at the magnificent 505, venue owner and bassist extraordinaire Cameron Undy brings his truly groovy 20th Century Dog project back for the first time in a while on Monday 5th. Fellow local groove masters Matt Keegan (sax), Gerard Masters (keys) and Jamie Cameron (drums) make for a very worth-while Monday night gig. On Thursday 8th, world-class Australian violinist Daniel Weltinger is launching his album Souvenirs, which sees the Sydney-based musician paying tribute to the great gypsy composer and guitarist Django Reinhardt. This is a must-see for any fans of gypsy jazz, as Weltinger’s is truly extraordinary. Also on Thursday, Surry Hills venue Tone nears the end of the lease on its current space with Songs performing live. With local agency Popfrenzy presenting, one could expect some truly wonderful and alternative local music. Tiger Choir are in support. Friday 9th finds Melbourne cool dudes Eagle and The Worm performing at Oxford Art Factory in Paddington. Think groovy, 60s-inspired indie-pop on the party side of things. The Frowning Clouds are in support. At The Metro in Sydney’s CBD on Saturday 10th, Aussie folk’s Mr. Nice Guy, Josh Pyke is bringing the goods for an evening of tasteful acoustic pop. Also on Saturday at the Basement, local nu-soul master, pianist Danny Goodacre is bringing his Danny G Felix Project for a double bill with Roger Vs The Man for a night of top shelf local pop, jazz and funk – a guaranteed party.
