Best Pub Grub: The Shakespeare Hotel

Everyone already knows that the Shakespeare Hotel in Surry Hills is renowned for its multi-award winning food. But it’s the atmosphere that really makes the Shakespeare the place to eat. This is the classic Sydney pub, unchanged since 1979. Unlike many other pubs that went through the craze of replacing their original furnishings with soulless stainless steel bars, this pub has never been messed with. The crowd is intensely loyal and incredibly eclectic; on any given night you can find journos, hobos, actors, models and people from all walks of life; it’s a real celebrity haunt. Open 10am to midnight, the bistro closes at 10pm and happy hour is from 3-6pm with $2.90 local beers. (Jason Marshall) 200 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills
