NEXT NEXT FESTIVAL

NEXT NEXT FESTIVAL

It’s appropriate that when you repeat a mundane word, it becomes strange, other. Next said once is normal. Next said twice, Next Next, becomes onomatopoeic, an incantation. Just like how everyday sounds, squeaks and squelches become strange, other, and oddly musical when repeated and represented. The Next Next Festival dwells in the shadowlands between electronic experimentation, sound art, and music, operating as a locus to a performance by the 35-piece Splinter Orchestra, a debate dismantling the question is experimental music boring? as well as open-forums canvassing the work of Douglas Kahn, Ben Byrne, Peter Blamey and Ivan Lisyak. Its home from July 7 to 9 is the newly anointed ARI (Artist Run Initiative) in Chippendale, Serial Space, and the festival will kick off with the performance of the improvisational collective described as having an effect like, ‘quicksand,’ the Splinter Orchestra. Check out the website for more details on the other events and discussions at www.serialspace.org. (AB)
