LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide July 21st

If “punkish doom disco” is your thing then Damn Dogs are the exact band to satiate that need. The new project is debuting at Oxford Art Factory on Thursday 21st, with Wolf & Cub and Millions in support. Friday 22nd and Tone in Surry Hills is the place to be, with the inaugural We Got Soul night taking place there courtesy of SSRadio UK. Tunes will be provided by the likes of Phil Hudson, Agey, Paul Hatz, Dave 54 and Frankie Romano to name but a few. Also on Friday, in an unusual move for a hyped indie act, WIM are launching their debut album at Paddington Uniting Church as they kick off their ensuing tour – should be interesting. Anyone up for something different can find it at The Factory Theatre in Marrickville on Saturday 23rd with Black Cherry, a night of bands (The Art, Doubleblack and The Ramshackle Army to name a few), DJs (Simon Day, Goldfoot and Rockabilly Rhino for instance) and burlesque. Anyone with rockabilly hairdos is sure to have a ball. Those who remember the Gorillaz’ first single will recognise the voice of Del The Funky Homosapien as he rocks Oxford Art Factory on Sunday 24th. It’s the Californian MC’s first time in Australia for nearly 20 years, so he’s expecting a warm welcome (nudge, nudge). Monday 25th is certainly the most happening Monday night this city will see for a little while: Modest Mouse play Enmore Theatre in Newtown and The Kills play The Metro in Sydney’s CBD – pick a card. Wednesday 27th and The Basement in Circular Quay has an unlikely double bill in the form of Fitz and the Tantrums, an L.A. soul revue in town for the Splendour Fest, with Sydney’s own Lanie Lane. The latter are a bit of a mystery, having never performed in Australia before, but Lanie is well worth the ticket price on her own, so there’s nothing to lose! Anyone up for the legendary Pulp can find them at Hordern Pavillion in Fox Studios, also on Wednesday – charismatic front man Jarvis Cocker’s borderline offensive stage banter is surely worth the ticket price in itself. Another Splendour In The Grass visitor, British Sea Power, is playing at Oxford Art Factory on Thursday 28th. The U.K. troupe are getting rave reviews for their cinematic rock, so it should be a winner. The exclamatory Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! are in support. That same night, all-girl four-piece Warpaint are in town for Splendour and are stopping by The Manning Bar at Sydney Uni for their own side show. As well as being up to the gills in hype, these girls are also actually very interesting, as their minimal, poetic songs suggest. Also on Thursday, the snowballing appreciation for L.A. three-piece Foster The People has brought them to our shores, courtesy of Splendour In The Grass (surprise, surprise), and fans can catch them at The Gaelic Club in Surry Hills. The veritable Lord Jesus of hype, James Blake is also playing on Thursday, at the Factory Theatre – if it isn’t already, this show will sell out, in which case Blake’s second show at the Metro should offer salvation. Lastly, brooding U.K. masters Elbow are playing at the Enmore on Friday 29th – make sure you catch these gentlemen before they get too big for such relatively intimate venues.
