LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide July 14th

Brooding indie darlings Alpine are at Oxford Art Factory on Thursday 14th with Boy In A Box and Camden– worth a look – and a trio of promising young Blue Mountains bands are at the Basement in Circular Quay. They are Kooyeh, The Raw Tide and Bones and All – good vibes for sure (especially if you’re form the mountains!). Friday 15th has indigenous soul crooner Dan Sultan playing at the fantastic and intimate Brass Monkey in Cronulla, with Oh Mercy’s Alexander Gow on board for the night, as well. Also on the 15th, U.K. producer/DJ duo The Nextmen are back in town for one show only at Oxford Art Factory. Saturday 16th is Major Raiser at The Gaelic Club on Devonshire St, Surry Hills, with Parades, Rüfüs and Bon Chat Bon Rat heading up the bill for the fundraiser event (although what the funds are being raised for isn’t entirely clear). Also on Saturday, Aussie disco-pop heavyweights Miami Horror are performing at the Metro Theatre in the CBD, with Gold Fields in support, get in quick! Sunday 17th sees the fantastic Red Rattler in Marrickville host Rock Against Racism, a fundraising event by the Solidarity organisation for issues of inequality and human rights in Australia. The enchanting Emma Davis as well as L-Fresh the Lion, Ex-Trendy and Brackets make up but a few of the names helping out for the cause. iHearMusic.com’s The World nights continue at The Basement in Circular Quay on Tuesday 19th, with this week’s line up featuring Dr Goodvibe with Jo Fabro and Keren Minshull – a quality showcase of local world music to spend a Tuesday night on. Wednesday 20th continues the July residency of Afro Nomads at The Mac on Wentworth Ave as part of their hugely popular World Music Wednesdays. With an eternal door price of zero and guaranteed quality live music, The Mac is definitely one of the unsung heroes of Sydney’s music scene – a must for those who haven’t been. If “punkish doom disco” is your thing then Damn Dogs are the exact band to satiate that need. The new project is debuting at Oxford Art Factory on Thursday 21st, with Wolf & Cub and Millions in support. Friday 22nd and Tone in Surry Hills is the place to be, with the inaugural We Got Soul night taking place there courtesy of SSRadio UK. The groovy tunes will be provided by the likes of Phil Hudson, Agey, Paul Hatz, Dave 54 and Frankie Romano to name but a few – definitely worth a look. Also on Friday, in an unusual move for a hyped indie act, WIM are launching their debut album at Paddington Uniting Church as they kick off their ensuing tour. The grand arches and reverberating surfaces of that building can only enhance the psychedelic pop of the Sydney band – should be interesting. Anyone up for something different can find it at The Factory Theatre in Marrickville on Saturday 23rd with Black Cherry, a night of bands (The Art, Doubleblack and The Ramshackle Army to name a few), DJs (Simon Day, Goldfoot and Rockabilly Rhino for instance) and burlesque. Anyone with rockabilly hairdos is sure to have a ball. Those who remember the Gorillaz’ first single will recognise the voice of Del The Funky Homosapien as he rocks Oxford Art Factory on Sunday 24th. It’s the Californian MC’s first time in Australia for nearly 20 years, so he’s expecting a warm welcome (nudge, nudge).
