PIRANHA HEIGHTS

PIRANHA HEIGHTS

“Bitching, fun and nihilistic,” is how director, Fiona Hallenan-Barker, describes Piranha Heights, a play about two sons who after discovering their mother’s death reunite to discuss her will, flat and furniture. It was written by acclaimed UK playwright, Philip Ridley. “He’s a brilliant writer and very well known in the UK,” she tells me. “Piranha Heights is his best work so far. It takes all his previous works and really pushes the boundaries. It’s sophisticated in style and I loved that.” She also describes the play as unique, quirky and outrageously dangerous with plotlines involving sex, drugs and violence. “Teenagers are getting younger so people at 11 are doing things quite extreme which is being discussed in the UK but not in Australia,” she continues, “I kept the play based in England because you can be from any country and understand what it’s like to be on the fringe of society.” Well, it sounds as though audiences are in for a wild and confronting ride or in the words of Hallen-Barker, “a cracking night in the theatre.”
