IN DA HOOD: meet the new kids on ‘The Block’

The first time I wondered down Eveleigh St I was stopped by a police car, they shone a light in my face and asked if I knew “what street I was on”, I said yes and they sped off, shaking their heads. A few years earlier a wrong turn landed me smack bang in the middle of the Redfern riots. The Block was a no-go zone.

That’s all changing as a new generation of residents – yuppies, hipsters, and students – move in on the area’s prime real estate.

We paid a visit to these nouveau ghetto-ites to find out why the heck they moved into an area notorious for drugs and race riots, but more importantly, how much rent they’re paying!

THOMAS JAMES SIMS
“I have no idea why I moved to The Block, just cheap rent I guess. I was told before I moved here that it wasn’t that bad anymore, and hey, it’s not that bad!”
Rent: $75 p/w

CHRISTIANE PROSSER
“I moved here because it’s close to University, and it’s cheap. The area’s historical problems don’t concern me because they’re not a present day issue.”
Rent: $165 p/w

DEAN McINTYRE
“I didn’t know anything about the public perception, and I’ve never had an experience in line with it. I moved here because my partner moved here and I wouldn’t have it any other way – I love him heaps.”
Rent: $150 p/w
