HOW TO: Talk with your local MP about same-sex marriage

Do you want marriage equality? The most effective way to be heard on the issue is also the simplest; by talking to your our local MPs.

To mark the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, the City Hub is publishing this guide to do just that. It’s time to SAY SOMETHING!

STEP 1: FIND YOUR FEDERAL MP

Your local MP is there to represent you, and your views in parliament. But it’s up to you to let them know what they are.

To find the out who your Local Federal MP is visit www.aph.gov.au/house/members/, here you can also find their phone number, email and postal address.

STEP 2: CONTACT THEM

Using those details write a letter to your local MP outlining your views on same-sex marriage.

Make sure you state that you’re contacting them as a member of their electorate, and include your postal address (even if you’re emailing) to back this up.

Describe how the issue affects you personally, and request a meeting with them to further discuss your views on marriage equality.

STEP 3: THE BIG MEETING!

Make it as personal as possible by focusing on how the current state of legislation (or lack there of) impacts on you, your family and your friends.

Make it personal for them too; ask if they are married, or intend to, and what it would feel like to be told they couldn’t wed.

Conclude by asking what they’re going to do as a result of your meeting, and let them know that their Party’s position on the issue will directly affect whether you vote for them.

If you’re still unsure about what to say www.australianmarriageequality.com/wp/get-informed/ is a great source for preparation material.

STEP 4: GET YOUR FRIENDS TO DO THE SAME
