VARIOUS – DIG CAVE DIG

When the hottest of hip young Melbourne bands get together to pay tribute to the spiritual Grandfather of Melbourne’s music scene, (Sir) Nicholas Cave, then you could and should expect the unexpected. If only. Fronting the Birthday Party, The Bad Seeds and The Grindermen, Cave’s output over three and a half decades has been monumental and highly influential. What? The Boys Next Door I hear you cry (Shivers anyone?)…well they seem to have been forgotten on Dig Cave Dig. What we do have here is eleven highly reverential covers of eleven excellent Nick Cave tunes. Red Right Hand, Into My Arms, The Weeping Song, Dig, Lazarus, Dig, Junkyard…the song choices are good but predominantly later day Cave.  But where Nick spent his time pushing the boundaries of music and performance (and occasionally taste), this compilation appears to afraid to touch either arrangement or instrumentation. The exception being Luke Legs excellent Dylanesque interpretation of Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow. Paying your respects is, well respectful, but to do the man justice it is perhaps the spirit of the endeavour that has been missed. Sorry, Nick, sorry.
