LIVE WIRE – SYDNEY LIVE MUSIC GUIDE

Things are winding down in Sydney town as St Nick pays sleigh parking at Westfield, but those eager to be entertained still have plenty of options:

Those attending the massive Gorillaz‘s Escape to Plastic Beach production at Sydney Entertainment Centre on Thursday are in for a treat, with hip hop legends De La Soul and synth-pop Swedes Little Dragon joining along to play their parts from the latest album. Legendary soul singer Bobby Womack is also in tow for what is set to be one of the more impressive international visits of 2010.

Friday 17th sees local Australian drumming legend Hamish Stuart launch his long-awaited solo album, Someone Else’s Child at Notes in Enmore. There he is joined by a host of incredible players and friends including Chris Abrahams, Tina Harrod, Stu Hunter, Dave Symes and Phil Slater amongst others.

Mona Vale Hotel hosts the hard-working Philadelphia Grand Jury as they continue on their mammoth Save Our Town national tour. Fans down south can catch them the following night at Waves Nightclub, near Wooloongong, before they hit Pyramid Rock Festival for New Years Eve.

Also on Friday, local hip hop label Big Village promise to make a night of it with their Christmas party at Tone in Surry Hills. Performers include rising local acts Tuka and True Vibe Nation, with The Tongue set to hop up for a song or two.

Saturday 18th offers a glut of live gems before things simmer down for Christmas: the anthem-tastic and always pleasant Jon Bon Jovi happens to be in town with his quartet. The additional show on Saturday at the SCG is sure to be nostalgic and grand.

Triple J darlings Cloud Control bring their indie gold to the Factory Theatre as they return home for a lengthy run of summer dates, which include the nearby Peat’s Ridge Festival, where they find good company in the impressive NYE line-up, which includes Trentemoller, Kate Miller-Heidke, The Break, The Chemist and Fire! Santa Rosa Fire!, amongst scores more.

Afrocolombian rockers Watussi appear at the Beach Rd Hotel in Bondi, with volcanic party beats in tow, for their final Sydney show of the year.

Boutique groovers Future Classic are putting on their final Adult Disco night for the year at Civic Underground, this time with a live set from Pantha du Prince (Berlin producer Henrik Weber) as well as sets by Future Classic DJs.

Finally, Heavy metal festival No Sleep Til threatens to pulverise the Entertainment Quarter as the Sydney chapter of the tour rumbles into town. Headliners Megadeth, NOFX, Dropkick Murphys and Parkway Drive are but a few of the big names eager to disintegrate eardrums on the night (watch out for zombies!).

Wiry rock hero and possible Scrooge look-a-like Tim Rogers can be found at Newtown’s The Vanguard on Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd, where his intimate Christmas shows will warm the cockles and probably encourage some alcohol consumption of some sort.

Rock steady local reggae masters Kingtide make sure they get the last word in before Chrissy Eve with their Thursday 23rd show at the Annandale Hotel. Dog Trumpet and Big are also in support for what should be a hearty night of skank and groove.
