SUN KIL MOON – ADMIRAL FELL PROMISES

Mark Kozelek is one of those artists at the touch of whose hand, all seemingly turns to gold. Having released many albums under his name and also under this moniker of  Sun Kil Moon and the seminal 90’s spook-country band Red House Painters,  he is consistently on a journey through his own dark mind, exploring its back-roads with his records. This one follows a very solitary path indeed – the album is played entirely by Kozelek on just two Spanish guitars and voice, which it must be mentioned are played with amazing dexterity and subtlety, each chordal passage and rolling picking rhythm is crystal-clear;  smooth flowing cadences a perfect vehicle for his crisp, lonesome tales of urban mythology. The album’s header Alesund is truly breathtaking in its scope and lyrical mastery, and the title track is Kozelek’s weary, mysterious storytelling at its best. This material recalls some of the spare genius in his covers album The Finally LP, and highlights a willingness to let songs breathe and stew rather than state the obvious, which is all the more satisfying for the audience.
