Mother of two, Sarah Morrison, began her catering business Little Wheelz so she could spend more time with her young children. She bakes up a storm in her inner west residence, and has some innovative ways of bringing her good cooking to you. The most exciting one has to be a High Tea in your home, set up with all the trimmings from tablecloth to china to coffee machine. It’s an absolute dream come true in terms of taking the work out of home entertaining! She and her husband set up half an hour before your guests arrive; and three hours later, they come back to take all the mess away!

In the mean time you and your guests will nibble on dainty little sandwiches, light and fluffy zucchini muffins, and a range of sweeter delights from decadent tiered platters. Your lips will be wet from a range of teas, juices and coffees – she’ll even provide bubbles if you fancy a tipple! Sarah particularly likes “themed parties because you get to be a little more creative with the food.” She’s already turned out tool-themed dainties for the folk at Bosch, and a range of children’s themes including fairies and butterflies. She’ll go right to the other end of the spectrum too, having catering a party for The Sydney Hellfire Club.

Foodie First XV

The 2011 Rugby World Cup will be held over the ditch in New Zealand. With a year to go, our Kiwi mates thought we might need a little taste of New Zealand to whet our competitive appetites. They’ve handpicked a  ‘First XV’ of Sydney restaurants to show off the best New Zealand produce for the whole month of September. If you dine at Otto in Woolloomooloo you’ll be eating New Zealand Regal King Salmon Crudo with Orange, Salmon Roe and Chardonnay Dressing. At restaurants including Arras (Walsh Bay), Atelier (Glebe); Ocean Room (Circular Quay) and Restaurant Balzac (Randwick) your taste of New Zealand might include venison, wagyu, littleneck clams or their awesome lamb! You can also go check out the Giant Rugby Ball down by the Overseas Passenger Terminal, open to the public daytimes from the 3rd-12th September.

Chinatown Uncovered
Last week I was lucky enough to be invited by the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore MP to The Great Asian Long Table. It was a special banquet in honour of the new Food Lovers Guide to Chinatown and Haymarket, with food from the neighbouring Zilver Restaurant. The hard work of deciding where to eat in the area’s 300 eating establishments will now be a piece of cake, thanks to my friend Helen Yee, normally found at popular food blog Grab Your Fork. The view down the table was a veritable who’s who of food industry glitterati including the god-mother of Australian food, Margaret Fulton; Stewart White, president of the Australian Association of Food Professionals, and Joanna Savill from the Sydney International Food Festival. Special guest, the Hon. Jodi McKay MP and NSW Minister for Tourism, had to rush back to her Newcastle electorate right after her speech, leaving us in the capable hands of Radio 2GB’s Glenn Wheeler nicely dressed in Chinese garb. The campaign is called Asia On Your Doorstep – check it out online and keep your eyes peeled for the useful pocket guide when you’re wandering the streets of our very own Chinatown.

Sustainable Science
With our local Greens gaining a record number of votes at the recent election, it’s clear that issues like fishing sustainability are on the minds of many voters. If you’d like to get the lowdown from a scientist rather than a political party, finefish, the retail arm of our local Martin’s Seafoods Sydney Wholesaler, are hosting a dinner on Wednesday 1st September. If you’d like to hear what Robert Kearney, Emeritus Professor of Fisheries at the University of Canberra, has to say, you’ll have to book in quickly with Andrew Boyd on (0407) 483 258.
