BEST COAST – CRAZY FOR YOU

BEST COAST – CRAZY FOR YOU

It’s a good thing this album is so genuinely sweet; otherwise it’d be the kind that’d worry your dentist. The title says it all. It’s an all-out, hearts-on-flannie-sleeve, sun-kissed love letter to an unknown sweetheart (although many might enjoy imagining the real-life love affair of lead chanteuse Bethany Cosentino and her amour, Wavves headman Nathan Williams). It’s pure, unapologetic pop, and gosh darnit, you’ll love em for it. In Boyfriend Cosentino croons she wishes you were her boyfriend; in When I’m With You, she has fun with Ronald McDonald as they cavort through the delights of Americana, sand on red-rubber sole, Rayban Wayfarers strapped firmly on. It’s an album that’s post-irony, post-cynicism; love exists (no snickers, thanks!); producers and shmick sounds are unnecessary (recording style being decidedly DIY); the sandy shores Best Coast dream of are littered with clichés, pop culture icons, cats, and all-too-direct cultural borrowings. But with their flippant attitude, startling good looks and gifted pop stylings we don’t seem to mind. Crazy for it? Yes. In responsible doses. (AB)
