Image: What’s this - a pocket of Newtown springing up in trendy Bondi? It’s easy to sink into this laid-back, homely cafe that looks and feels like a lounge room.

Maybe it’s because your Nanna’s got those chairs; or your Mum’s using the same crockery? Whatever it is, it makes a bowl of Homemade Baked Beans with Bacon and Maple Syrup ($5) taste mighty comforting. Menu items are mostly pre-prepared; a Sweet Chilli Chicken Burger ($8) benefits from good home-made coriander pesto and a great patty, but the Brasserie Bread roll would shine if they assembled them when ordered. “But who cares about savoury food when there are cakes to be eaten.” Andria Bingham has a point, and she can really bake. She aims for “cakes like Nanna used to make” but she easily surpasses mine with her gorgeous Raspberry Flan ($6). Cute Red Velvet Cupcakes are a sinful surprise, and well complimented by a cup of Morgan’s Handcrafted Coffee. A moist slice of Carrot Cake goes down a treat with a Stolen Recipe Iced Tea ($3.50). It’s nice to see a cafe supporting the local community’s musicians and artists with an egalitarian system: “Anyone who wants to have a go puts their name in our diary.” Are you the next big thing?
