Rozelle hosts African charity fundraiser

The Sydney College of the Arts has played host to the sale of around 100 contemporary Ubuntu artworks, part of an initiative to raise funds to improve the lives of women in Ethiopia.

A number of prominent Australian artists and photographers, including the likes of Joan Ross, Angus McDonald and Juli Balla, donated their work – which ranged from paintings and jewellery to photography and sculpture – towards the exhibition and sale on the weekend of February 20-21.

Funds raised are headed to the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. Established by Australian doctor, Catherine Hamlin, the hospital is funded entirely by donations and treats nearly 3,000 women every year suffering obstetric fistula – a result of obstructed childbirth without medical assistance. Having lost their babies, the women are also left with severe internal injuries. Now a condition almost unknown in the West, the condition remains prevalent in the developing world.
