THE DOLLY ROCKER MOVEMENT – OUR DAYS MIND THE TYME

The cruelest thing I’ve heard said about The Dolly Rocker Movement is that they inherited the crown of best Sydney psychedelic band from The Moffs. Such a statement insults both Matthew J Tow (and his associated bands, most recently The Lovetones) and TDRM themselves. In the name of all things holy, paisley, and psychedelic, can we just let The Moffs die the natural death that they did some two decades ago? RIP, OK? TDRM burn the Syd Barrett/Arthur Lee flame brightly there can be no doubt, but they also know the value of a good garage band riff (mostly plundered from the extensive Nuggets compilations), and My Heavenly Way owes a royalty or two to The Stems live classic Tears Me in Two. But neither musical originality nor depth of lyrics are relevant on this appallingly titled yet astoundingly listenable third album. For reasons that nearly defy logic, this is an album that just gets stuck in your player and insists upon repeat listens, leaving you with a smile on your face each time. Now that is the best psychedelic I’ve had in a while. If you have ever wandered through the strawberry fields, flowers in your hair on the way to San Fransisco via the Interstellar Overdrive then TDRM are for you. Fuck it, even if you haven’t.
