Rally against big polluters

About 500 protesters hit Sydney streets last week calling for an end to the influence of the fossil fuel lobby on climate change policy.

Greens Leader Bob Brown, Cate Faehrmann from the Nature Conservation Council of NSW and climate change activist Bev Smiles addressed the crowd at Sydney Town Hall. The protest then marched to State Labor Party headquarters in Sussex Street where the crowd chanted that “the issue is coal”.

“We are urging the government to protect people over the big polluters,” Cate Faehrmann said. “Every dollar squandered propping up carbon polluters is a wasted opportunity for tacking climate change and fast-tracking the nation’s transition to a clean, renewable energy-based economy.”

Faehrmann said people know the current global economic crisis will pass but future generations will have to live with the far-reaching consequences of current climate decisions.
