I Think We Are Gonna Need  a Bigger BoatThe BPA

By Chris Peken

The “story” goes that The BPA (Brighton Port Authority) recorded these tracks sometime in the 70’sunder the guidance of “chairman” Norman Cook (allegedly later to form The Housemartins and then become Fat Boy Slim). With luminaries such as Iggy Pop, David Byrne, Justin Robinson and Martha Wainwright dropping by to add their talents. Well that is when, by their own admission, things get weird (do the maths on Martha’s birthday). Ah well, any excuse to back-track musically. Overing The Monochrome’s He’s Frank is the Iggster, with the simple guitar and drums backing that worked so well for him on The Passenger and I’m Bored this is a surefire late summer favorite – reminding us how good that Pop-baritone can be. Beyond this things start to unravel, Justin Robertson’s Island cruise sufficiently, Martha gets all dub reggae inoffensively and Should I Stay or Should I Blow samples The Wailers, with a happy reggae beat that works well but a title that reflects how you might now feel about the album.
