Q & A – Qua

by Aidan Roberts

Whoever thought the death of synthesized music was at an end in the indie scene is dead wrong. Arriving like a war cry, this album’s opener Lapsang Souchong boasts a batallion of analog synths squelching cheeky arpeggios, and we’re away on a trip. This is the moniker for Melbourne-based electro experimentalist Cornel Wilczek, who performs most of the stuff on display here. It’s an impressive exercise in analogue and digital textures – synths and drums working together to create a frenzied club adventure, full of colour and life. The only problem is the album seems to lock into its bag of tricks and doesn’t really let it go. There are moments of post-apocolyptic serenity and some cool sounds throughout; Goodmorning Sun and the Lion’s Flying Dream being highlights, however most of these tracks hammer along with computer game insistency, which is fun at first but it does get a little tiring.
