Exotic Creatures of the Deep – Sparks

By Aidan Roberts

This adventurous duo have been around for a long time, and have tapped into a curious collective psyche with this album; somewhere between the playful operatics of mid-era Queen and the day-glo synthetic mincing of Devo. Wrapped in this musical palette and delivered in a series of mock-Britney lyrics, how does it come across’ To be honest, this is a hard ride to sit through; Good Morning squeaks at you with falsetto tirades, and Ron Mae never lets up this wailing schtick. Let The Monkey Drive is the best track here, a sure-fire festival dance hit that carries a clever air of the hey-day Pseudo Echo. These guys have worked hard to create a playful world of pop madness, and it shows in the meticulous production values and tightly woven harmonies. But despite a knowing sense of irony prevailing (not well hidden in I Can’t Believe That You Would Fall For All The Crap In This Song), this record should be great fun but instead just comes across as a bit annoying.
