The Let Go – Kid Confucius

by Aidan Roberts

Bouncing off the back of their Motown-infused sophomore record Stripes, Sydney 8-piece collective Kid Confucius have laced their funk with a humid gruffness in their third album. There’s no denying that these guys are a real melting pot of action, whether you’re into the funk or not; chunky Woodstock guitars and tribal rhythms abound, and there is an overt sense of fun that is indeed infectious. There’s a hint of the mainstream Hollywood yelp of Lenny Kravitz in Rob Hezkial’s vocals, and the driving drums and horns keep the soul real and focused, never too academic, and with a looseness that feels right. Listen to the Motown swagger of Good Luck and the go-go stomp of Fool Around, and you get a sense of the frenetic energy of these performers. Although in weaker tracks the music can fall into a slightly token party groove, in its more raucous moments this album is a joyfully happening thing, complete with cheeky music references (Big Black Cloud) and honest abandon (The Breakup). Not bad at all.
