Watch Me Disappear – Augie March

By Chris Peken

It will come as no surprise to anyone who has heard Augie March’s latest single Pennywhistle, to learn that their new album Watch Me Disappear was recorded at Neil Finn’s Roundhead studios in New Zealand. Not that Glenn Richards needs too many tips in the songwriting department, but one can only wonder at what conversations may have transpired had he and Neil sat down to chew the tune-smith fat. Watch Me Disappear is a significant leap forward for a band that has already established themselves as the country’s best exponents of the intelligent pop song. Kicking in with a title track that runs on a throbbing bass-line and an almost Disco Inferno chorus before unleashing the aforementioned single, two tracks in and you know something special is unfolding. There is classic Richards in the form of Farmer’s Son and Becoming Bryn, more Finn influenced tunes like Mugged By the Mob and a wonderful surprise in Lupus, classic, unadulterated American West Coast mid-70’s rock in all its majesty. That the album was produced by Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, My Morning Jacket, The Shins) is the last piece that completes the Watch Me Disappear puzzle. A certifiably classic album.
