EXHIBITION: BOB DYLAN’S DRAWN BLANK

EXHIBITION: BOB DYLAN’S DRAWN BLANK

BY GISELLE NGUYEN

Bob Dylan has made quite a name for himself over the years as the musical world’s greatest poet, with iconic tunes such as Like A Rolling Stone and Blowin’ in the Wind. But music isn’t his only talent ‘ this month, a collection of prints from the legend will be coming to Australia for the first time. The times they are a-changing, indeed.

Vibrantly sensitive and emotional in their simplicity, Dylan’s artworks were created on his 1989-1992 world tour. They started off as drawings done to ‘relax and refocus a restless mind’ which were later published in a book called Drawn Blank and, when approached by a German curator who expressed interest in exhibiting the originals, Dylan decided to transform the sketches into watercolour paintings to be exhibited the world over.

Like the music he’s renowned for, Dylan’s paintings subtly convey stories with their colourful poetics. They are abstract and thought provoking, the fruits of a sometimes troubled, always reflective genius.
