Dying Breed

Dying Breed

Locally produced horror-thriller film Dying Breed delves deep into Tasmanian folklore to create a macabre and distinctly Australian story.

The legend of the illusive Tasmanian Tiger is interwoven with the true tale of Alexander “Pieman” Pearce, 19th century prison escapee turned cannibal. This factual springboard is then adorned with generous lashings of guilty, gory escapism.

While the film certainly has its failings – an over-reliance on horror clichés for one – the enterprise is redeemed by the beautifully filmed Tasmania wilderness, against which most of the scenes were shot on location.

Actors Leigh Whannell and Nathan Phillips, previously seen in the Saw franchise, add some star power to a well-realised film that deserves to gain an audience both at home and overseas.
