Keep the Faith – Toni Childs

By Chris Peken

A decade is a long time in the music industry where out of sight is very much out of mind. After recovering from Graves Disease, Toni Childs is back with her first album and tour in ten years, albeit with material primarily written in the mid-nineties. Childs has lost none of that remarkable timbre in her voice, setting her apart and ahead of the field before she begins, and Keep the Faith is an apt title for Childs’ personal and global perspective, although there is nothing here that will surprise or enlighten anyone. Because Your Beautiful has already won her an Emmy, and the title track and God in the Supermarket will be radio friendly hits and live favorites for years to come, but elsewhere the album is lacklustre, as is evident on One Life that borrows in every facet from U2’s One. One wonders what brand new songs might bring from a great voice that needs matching material.
