Grafton Primary – Eon

Eon – Grafton Primary

By Chris Peken

Pop has eaten itself, regurgitated its meal, and someone is consuming the same meal again. “There’s no future, there’s no yesterday / The moment that you hear this / Is all there is, is all there is” – if that refrain from Grafton Primary’s All There Is doesn’t sum it up nicely. In such a world Eon is a post-pre modern masterpiece; invigorating a new generation of ears. If only Human League, Kraftwerk et al had never existed Grafton Primary could be breaking new ground with their synth-heavy electro pop and Joshua Garden’s deadpan vocals. But they did. The Grafton boys do have a good handle on the Depeche Mode bass-synth hook, and know that anthemic lyrics suit those who aspire to the stadium stage; but titles (and according lyrics) like Records for the Righteous and We Are the Music will really only appeal to those listening to this genre the first time around. When they ask, “You are the music / Where do you belong ‘ / Can anybody tell me what to do with this song'” unfortunately some less than charitable ideas come to mind.
