Trigger Happy – Comatone & Foley

Trigger Happy is an appropriate title for this release from producers / composers Comatone & Foley, well-revered break-beat champions of the scene. Here we have a colourful blend of multi-layered electronics, opening synth-fest CFI sounding like a rapid-fire frequency-switch between a demo reel of Vangelis and Mike Oldfield, interspersed with sinewy electronics and snaking jazz percussion. It’s quite seductive, and more subtle than expected. These guys have a solid handle on tightly syncopated drum and bass routines, and their ultra-hi fidelity experimentation leads to some exciting turns of melodics and ambiance in the sequencing. The whole thing feels quite cinematic, reminiscent of some of the film work of Elliot Goldenthal or the aforementioned Vangelis, and with the much-needed space between the blips and crunches, Comatone & Foley bring you in and out of the darkness with each track, keeping a solid finger on the pulse of dynamics and tone-colour. Most exciting is the clearly Philip Dick inspired Electric Sheep – hallmarking this as a record that is a cut above most of the ambient stuff out there.
