O Soundtrack My Heart – Pivot

By Chris Peken

Pivot’s initial international release after becoming the first Australian act signed to the iconic Warp Records (after an offer of a 16 album deal!) is both a confident step forward and an enthusiastic push into the unknown. Electronic instrumentals and post-apocalyptic landscapes dominate what initially comes across as a cold and hostile world before slowly welcoming the persistent listener into the fold. Guitars stagger and jerk, synthesisers provide a steely wash and the rhythms are precise in their intent and execution. Mixed by John McEntire of Tortoise and Sea and Cake, O Soundtrack My Heart brings to mind new stable-mates Apex Twin and Square pushed along with electronic pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre (the album artwork was done by Michel Granger who did Jarre’s Oxygene). Evocative and pulsating in parts, there is drama aplenty as Pivot soundtrack not only their own hearts, but a Wells-ian war of multiple worlds colliding. O Soundtrack My Heart is a fitting beginning to Pivot’s attempts at world domination – this world and beyond.
