Anti-Pope protest leads to arrest

A 19-year-old man from Newcastle was arrested by police last Saturday as World Youth Day pilgrims clashed with anti-Pope protesters.

There was an alleged confrontation between the two groups at around 2:30pm, as pilgrims were walking through Moore Park towards Randwick Racecourse for an evening vigil with Pope Benedict XVI.

Hundreds of people lined up alongside the pilgrim walk to protest against the Pope’s opposition to homosexuality and birth control.

It was alleged that the man in question jumped on a gay protester and punched him in the neck.

Police say the man was questioned before being released without charge. No formal complaint was lodged.
