Local businesses seek better representation at council

Business owners are being urged to register their details before August 18 in order to vote in this year’s City of Sydney mayoral election.
General Manager of the Kings Cross Partnership, Linda Mearing, has organised a series of monthly breakfast meetings in the lead-up to the September election to reinstate the significance of votes from the business community.
“These votes could mean the difference between a candidate with a business focus getting elected or not,” Ms Mearing said. “At the moment most of the councillors do not come from a strong business background. Limited representation on the Council means there’s very little focus on issues in the interest of business.”
Liberal Shayne Mallard is the only Councillor that is also a small business owner. He will be a guest speaker at this month’s breakfast meeting, along with Kathryn Greiner, on April 24.
Ms Mearing believes it is in the best interest of small business owners to have their voice represented, and would like to see more than one councillor elected from within business.
“We’d like to see a 30 or 40 per cent representation in the interest of better balance,” Ms Mearing said. “Business drive the economic wellbeing of the City, and small businesses employ a majority of workers.”
The meeting begins at 8am on April 24 at Club Swans, 28 Darlinghurst Road, Kings Cross.
